The Fest 17: Thoughts On The Initial Lineup, Favorite Memories & More

By: Charlie Daffron

Earlier this week, the first Fest 17 lineup announcement dropped. The first announcement featured the first 115 bands of the 400+ total bands that will be playing the festival. The first lineup featured a nice roster of local, national, and international acts, including a few surprises, like Lagwagon playing the 20th anniversary of their album Let’s Talk About Feelings. Obviously, many people are extremely excited about the first batch of bands, and even more excited to see what the second lineup announcement has in store. We asked some Festers to share their thoughts on the lineup and their favorite memories from the best weekend of the year.

Patrick Erhard

1) Where are you from?

San Diego, CA, USA, North America, Earth

2) Have you Fested before and if so, how many Fests have you been to?

Never Fested before, but I’m having my bachelor’s party there this year, so it’ll be a memorable beginning.

3) What band (or bands) are you most excited to see this year?

Crusades. I might cry because I’ll never get to see them again.

4) Why do you Fest?

I had made a deal with myself to not go to Fest until I play it, but I’ve never seen Crusades and they are a huge influence on me musically. So, I broke that promise for Fest. Also, I guess I like my friends and like 300 of them will be there or whatever.

5) What is your favorite Fest memory?

I’m guessing it’s gonna be me getting into a wrestling match with an alligator.

6) What band (or bands) are you hoping to see on the second half of the lineup announcement?

Andrew WK, Black Sabbath, Propagandhi, The Reanimated Clash, AFI

Chad Gustafson

1) Where are you from?

I’m from Northwest Pennsylvania, but I move in four weeks to Northeastern California for a promotion.

2) Have you Fested before and if so, how many Fests have you been to?

This will be my third Fest and second Pre-Fest. I can finally afford to go every year.

3) What band (or bands) are you most excited to see this year?

Lagwagon and RVIVR should be sweet. I think RVIVR was my first fest set ever.

4) Why do you Fest?

I Fest because I can! It’s the ultimate vacation: PBR, pizza, and good tunes!

5) What is your favorite Fest memory?

Favorite Fest memory was bamboozling my way into an Iron Chic mystery set when I heard my buddies yelling for me to come in. It was filled to capacity. It’s kinda foggy, but I do remember pulling a kid out of the pit that was mostly passed out (I’m an EMT). Favorite Pre-Fest memory was going crazy with Ray Rocket Carlisle in the pit for the Banner Pilot set. It ruled.

6) What band (or bands) are you hoping to see on the second half of the lineup announcement?

Man, Andrew W.K. played the Fest before my first one. I feel like Andrew W.K. is the ultimate party within the ultimate party. The Lawrence Arms are probably wishful thinking but I haven’t seen them in 7 years and I had to miss their tour dates! How sweet would it be for Polar Bear Club to be a band again?

Ryan Quinn

1) Where are you from?

I’m from Toronto.

2) Have you Fested before and if so, how many Fests have you been to?

I’ve Fested three times before, and every year is better than the last.

3) What band (or bands) are you most excited to see this year?

So far on the lineup, I’m most excited for Zeta, Gouge Away, Cursive, and Wolf-Face.

4) Why do you Fest?

I Fest because it’s like a free weekend of therapy with some friends from all around the world. I sing until I have no voice left, I drink too much, I eat too much pizza, and I barely sleep, but it’s the most positive feeling I’ve ever experienced. Everyone in this community is there for the same reason, nobody wants to fuck it up, and everyone is supportive and accepting of each other. It’s heaven.

5) What is your favorite Fest memory?

Last year, my mom came to Fest. She’s 62 years old with two knee replacements, and she wore a Fest Mom t-shirt all weekend. I went to a few different gigs than she did (she brought a friend her own age), but dancing to Iron Chic with her and seeing her sing along was one of the best moments of my life. This Festival is about appreciating each other and sharing the atmosphere, and I’m thrilled she could be a part of it.

6) What band (or bands) are you hoping to see on the second half of the lineup announcement?

I’m really hoping to see Sharptooth, Ducking Punches, Screaming Females, and Junior Battles added to the bill.

Lorien Lamarr

1) Where are you from?

Baltimore, MD

2) Have you Fested before and if so, how many Fests have you been to?

Yes. This will be my fourth Fest.

3) What band (or bands) are you most excited to see this year?

I never really thought I’d get the chance to see Cursive, so I’m pretty excited for that. There are so many great bands already announced that I’m dying to see again (Dead to Me, Metz, RVIVR, Makewar, Lemuria, Zeta, Arms Aloft, Pkewx3, Signals Midwest, Pears, Iron Chic, Bad Cop/Bad Cop… I could go on forever), but there are two standouts to me (so far) in what’s been announced: Spanish Love Songs dropped a record that could easily be album of the year and I cannot wait to scream along with them and Sincere Engineer who I am really hoping will play with a full band at Fest. I also have tried at the last 2 Fests and failed to see Bike Tuff, so catching Bike Tuff is at the top of my priority list this year as well.

4) Why do you Fest?

I Fest because Fest gives me the opportunity to see a large number of bands that even if they toured through my town might only play a dive bar to 12 people. While I go to those local shows as well, Fest provides a platform for me to see them play for hundreds or thousands of people who all love it just like I do. I suppose now that I’m looking at what I wrote you could I say I Fest because of the community. I also Fest for exposure to bands I wouldn’t have found on my own. Every year I return home with a list of bands I heard other people talk about or I randomly caught 10 mins of any they sounded amazing.

5) What is your favorite Fest memory?

Last year I got on the photography team and it was the best and most exhausting but also best time I’ve ever had ever….ever. Hands down. I hope to do it again.

6) What band (or bands) are you hoping to see on the second half of the lineup announcement?

Every year I hope (possibly unrealistically) to see the Weakerthans or Alkaline Trio or Jawbreaker added. More realistically, I’d like to see the Dopamines again. Such Gold. I think if Strike Anywhere were going to come back in a big way now would be an appropriate time given the current political climate. I really enjoyed Intenable last year and I hope they come back again. Pet Symmetry (and IIOI too). Fingers crossed for Camp Cope and Diet Cig. Prawn. Again, I could go on and on, but I know for certain that whatever and whoever gets announced, I’m going to see dozens of bands I love and find dozens more new ones.

Sara Zitney

1) Where are you from?

I’m from Los Angeles, California.

2) Have you Fested before and if so, how many Fests have you been to?

This will be my 9th Fest. I started at Fest 8 but had to take a year off at Fest 15 to have a baby.

3) What band (or bands) are you most excited to see this year?

I’m most excited to see Cursive (I’ve loved them for a long time), Iron Chic (I just got into them recently), Spanish Love Songs (their new record is amazing), and Signals Midwest (I love them but the hardly ever come to the West Coast).

4) Why do you Fest?

I have lots of friends I only get to see once a year, and I love seeing bands that usually have small crowds when they tour be able to play to a giant, super stoked audience.

5) What is your favorite Fest memory?

Oh jeez, this is a hard one. Probably my first Fest when I saw Polar Bear Club and Menzingers at the Atlantic. It was so ridiculous and sweaty and the whole crowd was onstage singing along to their last song of the set. It was a great crash course in what Fest feels like.

6) What band (or bands) are you hoping to see on the second half of the lineup announcement?

I’m always hoping to see Against Me!, since they’re my favorite band in the world right now, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Cayetana.
